Reddit Chat not Working? 8 Ways to Fix It

Chats are always a welcoming feature that allows you to communicate with known and unknown users who share a similar interest with you. However, many people regularly report of their Reddit chat not working properly.

You cannot message certain users if they’ve blocked you. In such situations, Reddit doesn’t notify you, and there’s nothing you can do from your end to fix it.

However, if the cause is something else, you can apply the solutions mentioned in this article to fix your Reddit chat not working.

How to Fix Reddit Chat not Working?

Initially if the Reddit chat is not working, try restarting your device and check if it fixes your chat. If it does not, you can apply fixes for external causes, such as an outdated app or a corrupt cache file.

But, you need to apply problem-specific solutions if there are internal problems with Reddit or your account. You can follow the methods mentioned below to apply such solutions.

Check Internet Connection

A slow internet connection can be a major cause for Chat on Reddit not working. If that is the reason, you may also have issues using Reddit itself. In such cases, you can unplug your router and plug it back in. Then, try using the chats again.

You can also try turning off Wi-Fi and turning it back on your device. If you use an Ethernet cable, unplug it and connect it back. If none of these solutions fix the internet issues, you need to contact your ISP.

Clear Cache Data

Clearing the cache of the Reddit app or the browser you use is a basic yet effective solution if your chat is not working. This gets rid of corrupted cache files that cause the issue. You can follow the steps mentioned below to do so.

If you’re using the Reddit app, open it from your desktop and vice-versa. Then, retry opening Reddit and its chats to see if it is fixed.

Wait Out Server Down

If Reddit has an unresponsive server or other server-related issues, you may face issues while chatting. In such a case, you need to wait until Reddit fixes the issue or finishes the server issue.

You can use various social media platforms to learn about ongoing server issues or to check if they’ve been resolved.

Wait Out Reached Limit

If you’re a new Reddit user, there’s a limit to the chats you can send out. If you try sending several messages during the starting phase, Reddit will categorize your messages as spam.

If that’s the problem with you, wait for a day and resend your message on the next. It’s better to send a few messages while starting out. Then, you can gradually increase the number as your account gets older.

Appeal Against Shadowban

You will have problems on chat if Reddit restricts, shadowbans or suspends your account.

When you get shadowbanned by Reddit, your chats, pictures, or posts are not displayed for other users. You can appeal against such actions by following the steps mentioned below.

  1. Open Reddit on a web browser on your device.
  2. Click on the search bar at the top.
  3. Open the appeals page of Reddit.
  4. Input your problem about the chat and appeal to lift the ban in the Brief Description section.
  5. Mark the checkbox at the bottom and click on Submit.

You can only use the appeals page if you’ve been restricted from chat or banned from Discord. If you cannot input your appeal, the issue is not due to such a ban.
