How to Access Blocked Websites?

The sight of “This site cannot be reached” while working on an urgent project can cause a head scratch. But being unable to reach the site even after multiple reloads can actually give you a headache.

An Internet connection that is too slow could prevent you from opening a site. In addition to that, blocked access prevents you from accessing a website. The good news is that you can get back to your favorite sites in just a few minutes by using some simple solutions.

Why Can’t I Access Certain Websites?

Certain websites could be blocked at a local level or a global level. By identifying the source of the blockage, you can apply a solution to get access to them. They are mentioned below:

  • Governmental restrictions: Governments block websites that do not comply with their policies.
  • Geographical restrictions: Some websites block access to their services in certain geographical regions.
  • Workplace restriction: Workplace restricts distracting websites
  • Manual Restriction: When someone else manually blocks websites on your device

(Note: Identifying them can be helpful, but they’re not mandatory.)

How Do You Access Blocked Websites?

It is important to know whether a blocked website is blocked internally or externally before you can access it. In the event that someone has blocked a website from your device, you will have to change it. The following methods can be used to accomplish this.

How to Access Internally Blocked Websites?

Whenever a website is blocked due to an internal problem, you should find an internal solution to it. It is possible to accomplish this in a few different ways.

By Host File

Initially, you need to check if a website is blocked on only one of your devices. If they open on a different device, someone has blocked the website from host files. You need to unblock the website within your device. This can be done by following the steps mentioned below.

  1. Type in and search for Notepad in your search bar
  2. Right-click on the notepad icon and click on Run as administrator.
  3. Go to File and click Open or press Ctrl + O.
  4. Go to This PC > Local Disk (C:) > Windows > System32 > drivers > etc
  5. Change file format from Text Document to All Files at the bottom right corner of the dialog box.
  6. Click on the hosts file and click Open.
  7. Look at the bottom and check if there is a URL for the target website after the line               # localhost and before # ::1 localhost

(Typing in “URL of the website” and saving the file blocks the website)

  1. If the target website is seen there, remove “URL of the target site” and save the File.

By Disabling Site Block Extensions

Website blocking extensions can be the reason behind blocked access. Check to see if you have such an extension for your browser. Type in Extension or go to Three dots > More tools >Extension to access extensions that you have installed. Then, search for site blocking extensions and disable them.

How Do You Access Externally Blocked Websites?

If the cause of a blocked website is external, you need to unblock it using a different solution. Your ISP or the company that owns the website could be responsible for blocking access to a website. If so, you can get access to them by redirecting the command through a different medium.

By Using a Proxy Server

When you search for a website, your command passes through your server to the website’s server through its IP address. When your Internet Service Provider blocks a certain website, data transfer from the website to the blocked IP address is not possible.

You can re-route your command to open the website using a proxy server. By doing this, your command goes through the proxy server with a different IP address. Then, it acquires data from the target website. However, the proxy server should be from a different geographical region. Through Website Server> Proxy Server> Your Device, you can get access to the target website.

You can access an online proxy server through or by using the Tor browser. The Tor browser has an in-built proxy server. To use the proxy site, follow the steps mentioned below:

  1. Open your preferred browser and open
  2. Choose a server of your choosing.
  3. Enter the target website’s URL in the Enter Url box.
  4. Click Go and wait for the website to open.

This method works well for all devices, including PCs and smartphones.

By Changing the DNS Address

DNS is a directory of websites on the Internet. When you try to access a website, you type in a domain name/URL. A DNS request is made from your computer to the DNS server to get an IP address for the URL. But, for blocked websites, the IP address is recognized and blocked by your ISP.

You can fix it by changing your DNS address to Google’s public DNS address. When you change your DNS server address, your Internet Service Provider cannot block access to the target website. You can do this by following the methods mentioned below:

For PC:

  1. Right-click on the WIFI/Ethernet icon on the bottom right corner of your computer
  2. Open Network and Sharing Center
  3. On the left-hand side, click on Change adapter settings
  4. Right on the network connection that you use and click on Properties
  5. Double-click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
  6. Select Use the following DNS server addresses
  7. Type in in the Preferred DNS server section and in the Alternate DNS server section
  8. Tick Validate settings upon exit box and click on OK.

For Mac:

  1. Click on the apple icon and choose System Preferences.
  2. Click on the Network icon
  3. Select the network that you’re using. (WIFI/Ethernet)
  4. Click on Advanced
  5. Go to the DNS section
  6. Then click on Add (+ icon) on DNS servers: section and type in the DNS address:
  7. Again click on Add (+ icon) and type in
  8. Click on OK and Apply

The idea behind this solution is to get to the wifi setting. Then, identify the DNS section and change it. For smartphones, you can follow the process mentioned below:

For IOS:

  1. Open your WIFI/WIFI settings on your phone
  2. Press on the WIFI network connected to your phone
  3. Scroll down and click on Configure DNS
  4. Click on Manual and press on Add Server
  5. Type in and press Save

For Android:

  1. Open your WIFI/WIFI settings on your phone
  2. Press on the wifi network connected to your phone
  3. Go to additional settings
  4. Click on IP settings
  5. Scroll to the DNS section, type, and press Save.

By Using a VPN

Using a Virtual Private Network allows you to easily access blocked websites on computers as well as smartphones. You can change your user location using a VPN. When you do so, you gain access to websites not available in your region.

Basically, your VPN server from a different location gets data from the target website. Then, they transfer the data from their server to your browser.

Depending on the type of your preferred VPN service, the ways to change the geo-location can be different. Open your VPN and go to the Change Locations service. Then, choose a location that you prefer.

However, access to the target website might be blocked in the country you choose as well. If so, try again until you find a suitable alternative.

By Using Google Translate

Google Translate can translate all the contents of a website. Using Google Translate on a blocked website opens the target website by redirecting it through its portal. For this, follow the steps mentioned below:

  1. Open your preferred browser.
  2. Search for Google Translate or type in
  3. Set the target language to the one that you prefer.
  4. Then paste the URL of the target website in the search box and press Enter
  5. Then click on the URL in the result section, and the website opens

This method works well for all the devices that you use, including PCs and smartphones.

By Using Web Archives

The Wayback Machine has an archive of millions of web pages on the Internet. This includes the website that you’re blocked from. You can open a copy of the website you want access to from their archives. So, follow the steps mentioned below to access these websites:

  1. Open your preferred browser.
  2. Type in in the search box and press Enter
  3. Type in the URL of the target website in the enter URL or keywords box
  4. Press Enter
  5. Then, choose a date and time that you prefer from the calendar
  6. Enjoy access to the website

This method works well for all devices, including PCs and smartphones.
