How to Enable Google Chrome Dark Mode in 2024

Using normal bright mode in Google Chrome can be quite straining to the eyes, especially during the night or in an improperly lit room. The Google Chrome dark mode helps to improve your browsing experience by reducing the brightness of the browser.

However, depending on the device you use, you can either enable dark mode through Chrome or use alternative solutions. Fortunately, we have compiled a list of methods to enable dark mode on Google Chrome.

How to Enable Google Chrome Dark Mode?

Google Chrome on Android devices already has a built-in settings option that allows you to enable dark mode quite quickly. However, you need to use other alternative methods to do the same on other devices. You can follow the methods listed below to do so.

Google Chrome Dark Mode Turned On

Through System Dark Mode 

Chrome has a function that customizes its appearance to the same as your system’s appearance. If you enable dark mode on your computer or mobile device, Google Chrome will also change to dark mode on that device. You can follow the methods mentioned below to do so.

On Windows

  1. Right-click on the Start icon at the bottom and click on Settings.
  2. Click on Personalization at the left side of the window.
  3. Click on Colors on the right side.
  4. Click on the dropdown menu next to Choose your mode. (Click on Choose your color for Windows 10)
  5. Select Dark. Or, Select Custom, click on the two drop-down menus that appear, and select Dark on both.
  6. Close the window.

Once you complete the steps mentioned above, you may need to close all the Google Chrome windows on your device. Then, restart the browser to use it in dark mode. However, Google Chrome on some computers instantly adapts to the dark mode.

On Mac

  1. Click on the apple icon at the top and select System Preferences.
  2. Click on General.
  3. On the Appearance section, click on Dark theme.

On iOS

  1. Open Settings on your phone.
  2. Tap on Display and Brightness.
  3. Select the Dark option.

Alternatively, you can use the shortcut button for the Dark mode through the control center using the method mentioned below.

  1. Open Settings on your device.
  2. Tap on Control Center.
  3. Scroll down and tap on the green plus icon on the Dark Mode option.
  4. Now, swipe up from the bottom or down from the top to open the control center.
  5. Tap on the Dark mode icon to access Dark mode.
  6. Open Google Chrome.

Through Chrome Settings

Enabling dark mode for the system on Android devices does not enable dark mode on Chrome. However, you can directly use the theme settings to enable Google Chrome dark mode on Android. So, follow the steps mentioned below to use the settings to enable dark mode on Android.

  1. Open Google Chrome on your device.
  2. Tap on the three-dot icon at the top right corner.
  3. Tap on Settings.
  4. Tap on Theme.
  5. Select Dark. Or tap on System Default if you have Dark mode enabled on your device.

Through Chrome Experimental Features

You can access the experiment page on Chrome to use features that they may add to the browser in the future. You can enable the dark mode on the experimental page to enable dark mode on Chrome.

On Mobile

  1. Open Google Chrome on your device.
  2. Tap on the search bar, input chrome://flags, and tap on Enter.
  3. On the search bar of the Experimental Features page, type in dark mode.
  4. Tap on the dropdown option under Android Chrome UI Dark Mode or Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents if available.
  5. Select Enabled.
  6. Tap on the Relaunch Now button at the bottom.
  7. After restarting Chrome, tap on the three-dot icon at the top right corner.
  8. Tap on Settings.
  9. Locate and tap on Dark Mode.
  10. Tap on the toggle button to enable it.

Dark mode for Web content enables dark mode for the Chrome browser as well as all the websites you open via Chrome.

On Desktop

  1. Open Google Chrome on your device.
  2. Click on the search bar at the top.
  3. Type in chrome://flags and press Enter.
  4. On the search bar for the page, type in Dark mode.
  5. Tap on the drop-down option next to Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents.
  6. Click on Enabled.
  7. Then, click on the Relaunch Button at the bottom.

As the name suggests, the experimental dark mode was introduced as a trail. So, the Google Chrome dark mode option may not be available on your device if Google decides to remove it permanently or abandon it.

Google Chrome Dark Mode Using Extensions

There are extensions available on the Chrome web store that you can use to enable Google Chrome dark mode. You can add the extension and enable the mode using the method mentioned below.

  1. Open Google Chrome on your desktop browser.
  2. Go to Chrome Web Store and click on the search bar.
  3. Type in Dark mode and press Enter.
  4. Click on the Featured Dark Mode extension.
  5. Click on Add to chrome and Add extension.
  6. After installation, click on the extension icon at the top right corner of the window.
  7. Click on Dark Mode to enable it.
