How to Block YouTube on Google Chrome?

Your devices already have settings built into them that can block YouTube on Google Chrome.

However, there are ways to block YouTube using external programs as well. So, the methods to block YouTube on Chrome are mentioned below. Follow any of these that you see fit.

Method 1: Block JavaScript on Site Settings

Disabling Javascript from YouTube’s site settings instantly blocks YouTube on Google Chrome.

1. Open YouTube on Chrome.
2. Click on the Settings option or the lock icon before the website URL.
3. Click on Site Settings.
   
4. Scroll down and select the dropdown option on Javascript to Block.

Method 2: From Host files 

A simple way to ban YouTube on Chrome is to add its address to the host file and block it from there. In order to do so, you will need administrative access to your PC.

For macOS, you can use the Terminal. So, follow the steps mentioned below to block YouTube on your Chrome browser.

For Mac

1. Search and open Terminal
2. Type in cd /etc and press Enter
3. Type in “ls” and press Enter
4. Again, type clear and press Enter
5. Type in sudo nano hosts, and press Enter
   
6. Enter the password of your computer. Then, the Host files open.
7. Go to the bottom using the down arrow button.
8. Type in “127.0.0.1 www.youtube.com” and press Enter
   
9. Press control + o and press Enter.
10. Press control + x and exit the Terminal.

For PC

1. Click on the windows icon. Search for Notepad.
2. Right-click on Notepad and choose Run as Administrator.
   
3. Tap yes on the confirmation window
4. Press Ctrl + O. 
5. Go to the file location, This PC > Local Disk (C:) > Windows > System32 > drivers > etc.
6. On the bottom right corner, change the format from Text document (*.txt) to All files.
7. Double-click the hosts file. The file opens on the Notepad.
8. At the bottom, type in “# 127.0.0.1 www.youtube.com”
9. Save the file by pressing Ctrl + S.
10. Close the Notepad.

Method 3: With Extension

It is possible to add Chrome extensions to block YouTube on Google Chrome. You can install a site-blocking extension from the Chrome web store for this. This feature is available in Google Chrome on PCs and Macs. 

You can add a blocking extension to your Google Chrome browser by following the instructions mentioned below.

1. Open Google Chrome
2. Click the extensions page link
   (chrome.google.com/webstore/)
3. In the search bar, search for Site Blocker. Press Enter.
   
4. Click on a website blocker you prefer and click install.
5. Click on the extension’s icon at the top right corner
6. Locate the extension and right-click on it.
   
7. Click on the blocker’s settings (or options) and navigate to the block list.
8. Enter www.youtube.com, 

Method 4: From Screen Time

For iOS and Mac users, Apple has a website restriction function that blocks websites on their browsers. You can add YouTube to the list of adult websites to block from your device. So, refer to the steps mentioned below depending on which device you use.

For iOS

1. Navigate to Settings.
2. Go to Screen Time > Content and Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions
   
3. Locate and click on Web Content
4. Click on Limit Adult Websites.
5. Click on Add Website from the Never Allow section at the bottom.
6. Add www.youtube.com.

 For Mac

1. Click on Apple Logo
2. Click System Preferences > Screen Time
   
3. Go to Content and Privacy 
4. Go to Web Content section and mark Limit Adult Websites.
5. Click on Customize
   
6. On the Restrict section, click the + icon.
7. Add www.youtube.com and click OK.
8. Close the window and 

In addition to blocking YouTube on Google Chrome, this process also blocks YouTube on other browsers on your device. It does not, however, prevent you from using the YouTube app.

Method 5: Set Passcode to Prevent Unblocking

After restricting YouTube with the method above, when you try to open YouTube again, a page with an Allow Website message comes up. It means users can unblock the website then and there. However, you should set a Screen Time passcode to prevent users from reallowing YouTube.

Here are the steps you need to follow:

On iOS

1. Navigate to Settings.
2. Tap on Screen Time
3. Tap on Use Screen Time Passcode below Content and Privacy restriction.
   
4. Enter and confirm a four-digit passcode.
   
5. Log in to your Apple ID with your credentials. 
   

For Mac

1. Click on the Search icon (magnifying glass) from the toolbar at the top of the screen.
2. Search for Screen Time and open it.
3. Click the Options button in the button left corner.
4. Tick the Use Screen Time Passcode checkbox.
   
5. Choose Allow this user to administer this computer and click on Next.
   
6. Enter and confirm a four-digit passcode.
7. Log in to your Apple ID with your credentials. 

In addition to blocking YouTube on Google Chrome, this process also blocks YouTube on other browsers on your device. It does not, however, prevent you from using the YouTube app.

Method 6: Using Router settings

It is possible to block YouTube via the router settings page. To do so, you need to find your router’s default gateway IP address.

Please follow the steps mentioned below to find the IP address and block YouTube.

1. Click the window icon and search and open Command Prompt.
2. Type in ipconfig and press enter.
3. Search for the Default Gateway IP address. (Usually 192.168.10.1)
   
4. Copy the IP address on your browser’s search bar and enter.
5. Log in with your router’s credentials. If you don’t have them, check at the back of your router for Username and Password.
6. Navigate to the Website Filter or Website Block section. 
7. Input www.youtube.com and save the page.

YouTube will be blocked for all devices connected to the router using the method mentioned above. This includes Google Chrome, other browsers, and the YouTube app.
